Volunteer group urges annual professional maintenance to address erosion at Walhalla trail park

A volunteer representative for the group that maintains the trail at the city park told Walhalla City Council the volunteers logged dozens of hours recently but cannot perform tasks that require heavy machinery, and urged the city to schedule at least yearly professional maintenance to address erosion and other infrastructure needs.
The speaker said the group recorded 68 volunteer hours in the last month and about 39 the month before, praised a recent trail-builder who did ‘‘an excellent job,’’ and said improved upkeep would support tourism and parking revenue. The speaker asked whether Chief Rice was aware of the erosion issues; staff responded that Chief Rice had been informed and that discussions about plans were ongoing.
The request came during the public-comment period. Mayor thanked the speaker and the stump-house volunteer group for their work and said the city appreciated the volunteers’ efforts. Council members did not make a motion on the request during the meeting; staff discussion in the administrator’s report later addressed related facilities projects and upcoming work that could affect the park.
The council did not take a formal vote on maintenance scheduling at the meeting; any decision requiring city procurement or capital work would follow the city’s procurement policy and be brought forward in a future meeting.
