Arundel Select Board members on July 14 agreed to begin the process to provide a privacy fence requested by neighbors adjacent to the planned fire-station expansion.
Board members said neighbors believed a fence had been promised at the public hearing and wanted it installed sooner rather than later. The manager and staff reported boundary surveys and an existing easement (reserved for maintenance of a subsurface waste disposal system) that could affect the fence’s placement. Concerns included whether fence posts would encroach on the easement, whether trees on town land should be removed before installation, and whether installing a fence now would impede construction of the expansion or tower work.
Several board members recommended staging the work: install the straightforward west-side fence that does not affect the easement, and delay complicated back-of-property fencing until construction begins so the fence does not interfere with heavy equipment. Board members asked the manager to engage the neighbors about fence height, material and timing and to confirm any applicable fence ordinances before contracting for work.
A motion to proceed with the process — including outreach to neighbors, investigation of the easement and survey maps and addressing tree removal as appropriate — was made, seconded and approved. The board did not commit to immediate construction; instead it authorized staff to begin planning and neighbor discussions and to return with recommendations and cost estimates.
