ULCT warns cities of June 1 truth‑and‑taxation deadline, notes HB236 drafting error

ULCT staff warned municipalities that June 1, 2026, is the last day to notify both the Utah State Tax Commission and county auditors of the date, time and place for August truth‑and‑taxation hearings. The League said failure to provide that notice by close of business would end a city’s ability to continue the truth‑and‑taxation process for this cycle.
Staff also flagged a technical drafting error in HB236 that moved a reference to the August hearing from section 4B to 4C while many cross‑references still point to 4B. Cassidy (ULCT staff) said League staff have notified Representative Karen Peterson, the Legislative Research and General Counsel office, and the Tax Commission and that officials agreed the discrepancy is a drafting error; she advised cities to follow legislative intent while the code text is corrected.
The League is tracking municipalities that are proceeding with truth‑and‑taxation and said it will reach out to any city whose notice was not on the tax commission’s list. Staff encouraged cities with drafting or technical compliance questions to contact ULCT and to provide any identified drafting errors for prompt follow‑up.
