Residents press Greece board on contractor damage, litter and code enforcement during public forum

Residents used the public forum at the Oct. 16 Greece Town Board meeting to press the town on several neighborhood concerns, including property damage tied to a fiber‑optic project, growing roadside litter and questions about code enforcement and trail upkeep.

Diana Sherwood, president of the Brook View HOA, said Frontier Fiber Optics contracted Parkside Utility Construction LLC to work in her community and that Parkside and its subcontractors damaged private landscaping. Sherwood said the neighborhood has documented a timeline of outreach and estimated "over $10,000 worth of damages to our properties," and she asked the board whether Parkside should be allowed to continue working in town given poor reviews and pending lawsuits.

Katie Frell, a lifelong Greece resident, described repeated roadside litter and said she and her daughter have filled contractor bags picking up trash along ramps and public spaces. "I'm asking for the town to consider possibly hiring a small team dedicated to year‑round litter pickup," Frell said, and she asked the town to help advocate with the New York State Department of Transportation for cleanup on state‑maintained ramps.

Laura Deconic raised multiple items: she asked whether the board had revisited the Island Cottage Road development with "evidence‑based practice," reported a resident complaint about a property at 16 Swan Sea Park and asked about issuance and enforcement of appearance tickets and bench warrants, and offered to help improve trail signage where benches and Frisbee golf targets are overgrown.

The Supervisor responded that the town will have code enforcement and the building department inspect contractor work and that the town can withhold permits from contractors if work is not up to standard: "we can hold off on giving them any further permits to do work anywhere else in the town," he said. He also described annual volunteer cleanup work the town supports and said DPW and parks staff can coordinate with volunteer groups and provide vests and bags.

On legal enforcement, the Supervisor noted that bench warrants and their issuance are handled by the courts but said the town regularly meets with courthouse officials to encourage enforcement when appropriate and that the police will honor and execute warrants when issued.

Other public comments included a Halloween safety reminder from a resident asking neighbors to leave porch lights on for trick‑or‑treaters. The Supervisor closed the forum by inviting residents to contact council members or his office for follow‑up.
