Medina County proclaims June 15 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day; senior services report Meals on Wheels grant and event turnout

The Medina County Board of Commissioners proclaimed June 15, 2026 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and heard a report from senior-services staff about outreach and short-term supports for older residents.
During the proclamation the board highlighted awareness, prevention and community engagement as priorities for protecting older adults. Members of the county’s Adult Protective Services unit were invited forward during the recognition.
Laura Toth, who provided the department update, said staff have established memorandums of understanding with several facilities — including one in Cuyahoga County — to allow emergency placements of adult protective services clients when facilities have available capacity. Toth said the agreements are arrangements to call facilities that can accept a client rather than guaranteed reserved beds.
Toth also reported Senior Day on May 20 drew more than 650 attendees and 85 vendors. "We had over 650 people walk through the event. 85 vendors," she said.
Toth told commissioners the local Meals on Wheels affiliate was notified that Meals on Wheels National received a large philanthropic gift; as part of that program the local agency was selected for a $10,000, unrestricted grant. "As part of our annual survey to Meals on Wheels, they chose 6,000 agencies to receive a $10,000, non-restrictive grant," she said; the local program expects to apply the funds toward costs of home-delivered meals.
Toth described plans by the Senior Adult Foundation to pilot a $50 produce distribution for eligible seniors at the Medina Farm Farmers Market to address low enrollment in the federal Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program; details will return to the board after the foundation meets. She also announced a town hall with state Rep. Melanie Miller scheduled for Aug. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Medina Center.
The proclamation and department update were approved as presented; commissioners recorded no public comment on the item.
