Residents report targeted burglaries; trustees request briefing from Lake County Sheriff

During trustee reports and public comment, trustees and a resident described a recent burglary they said appeared targeted and raised concerns about alleged profiling of Asian residents across multiple North Shore communities. A resident who discussed the incident said valuables were taken and that she believed the suspects had monitored social‑media activity before the break‑in.

Trustees said they want clearer follow‑up from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. "Let's have a meeting with Lake County Sheriff Department with the village so that we can get at least what the investigative thing is and how they go about investigating the crime," one trustee said. Another trustee said the village has previously received major incident updates from the sheriff but that the county’s new CAD system has reduced the detail the village receives.

Trustees and staff said they would ask the sheriff’s office for more detailed incident reports and a briefing on investigative steps and prevention strategies. Officials suggested village‑level responses the village can take immediately—public communications reminding residents to lock doors and windows, camera and lighting recommendations, and distributing a crime‑prevention cheat sheet the HOA requested.

Trustees also discussed coordination across municipalities because the burglaries may involve actors operating across multiple jurisdictions. "They're working with the other municipalities because there's multiple police departments involved," a trustee said about the sheriff's response. The board asked staff to pursue a meeting with the Lake County Sheriff and to improve notification practices to better inform affected residents.
