The Blaine Police Department received the Special Olympics Minnesota Champion Agency Award during the May 18 Blaine City Council meeting.
Molly Ekins, director of special events at Special Olympics Minnesota, presented the award and said the Champion Agency designation recognizes law enforcement agencies that meet five criteria including fundraising, volunteering and supporting athletes through events such as the Law Enforcement Torch Run, Polar Plunge and unified partnerships.
The mayor and the department’s chief praised the PD’s participation statewide and acknowledged Detective Orin Christiansen’s role as primary Special Olympics coordinator and as a unified partner with local athletes. The chief thanked department staff and volunteers for supporting events and athlete programming.
Mayor Tim Sanders noted Blaine is a host city for summer Special Olympics events and encouraged the community to attend. The council joined department staff and Special Olympics representatives for a recognition photo.
