Braintree council approves CPA funding for Fire Headquarters roof and façade

The Braintree Town Council voted unanimously on June 2 to appropriate Community Preservation Act funds to restore the roof and façade of the Braintree Fire Headquarters.
Chief of Staff Karen Nyman told the council the Community Preservation Committee recommended expending CPA historical-account funds totaling $139,629 to replace the existing asphalt-shingle roof with synthetic slate and install snow guards, replace the wood cornice, and restore copper gutters and downspouts to preserve the building's historic character. "A copy of the project application should be in your packets tonight," Nyman said, asking for favorable action.
Counselors asked about the construction timeline and operational impacts. Officials said bids are due the week following the meeting, with a hoped-for construction kickoff in August and roof work completed by November; the town does not anticipate closing the fire station. "At no time do we see the fire station having to be closed down at all," a town representative said, noting contractors will coordinate with the chief on apparatus movement when necessary.
Councilor Flareity emphasized that the project is funded entirely through CPA because the building is in the historic district and that CPA funding cannot support many municipal buildings. The council closed the public hearing and then voted to appropriate the funds under Mass. Gen. Laws c.44B, following a Ways and Means recommendation for approval.
What happens next: The Community Preservation Committee and the director of planning and community development will supervise expenditure and oversee administration of the project; town staff will return with details as bids are received.
