Middleton backs USDOT Safe Streets planning grant, agrees $65,000 match in 2027 budget

The Middleton Finance & Personnel Committee voted unanimously on May 19 to support the city’s application to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program through Resolution 2026-18.
Member Madden moved approval "on behalf of Public Works," and staff noted the application requires a local match of $65,000 that the city would program into the 2027 budget. Ben from Public Works said the city’s internal safety team has worked with SRF on the grant application and that staff have also coordinated with the school district on safety needs in the study area.
A committee member asked whether funds could be used for the underpass on Century next year; staff responded no, explaining that the grant is split into planning and construction phases and only projects with an established safety action plan qualify for construction funding. The committee approved the resolution and asked staff to proceed with the application process and include the local match in next year’s budget process.
Staff said the grant application is due at the end of the month and that they hoped to proceed to demonstration funding if the planning phase is successful.
