Board approves recreation contracts and special-use permits, accepts Rotary donation and notes AED funding for parks

The Chesterton Parks Board approved several routine recreation contracts and special-use permits and accepted a donor grant to support recent renovations.
The board approved two recreation service agreements for the adult slow-pitch softball umpires, who have served the league for several years. Staff then presented three special-use permit requests: use of a Dogwood Park field by the Duneland Boys & Girls Club for a pitch/hit/run event June 30 and regular after-school sessions Aug. 25–Oct. 21; an additional Light the Way worship date on Oct. 23; and a volunteer-run kids snack distribution at Thomas Centennial Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 9 to Aug. 6. Tyler said the snack program had been revised from prepared meals to prepackaged snack bags after health-department concerns; the board approved all three permits.
Separately, Tyler reported the town council approved $10,000 in opioid-unrestricted funds to install a secure AED cabinet at the east side of Dogwood Park and to upgrade the AED enclosure at Chesterton Park. The board also moved and accepted a $4,000 Rotary District grant check from Barbara Black to help cover bandstand renovation costs and building-trades program expenses.
The board approved the contracts, permits and donation by voice vote. During board comments, member Wendy praised the recent bandstand rededication; staff thanked volunteers and the DMAN building trades program for their work.
