Commission members used the commission’s May 1 meeting to review community feedback from a recent master-plan readout and to raise concerns about balancing redevelopment with preservation.
Staff said the readout drew about 75 participants and that the master-plan advisory group is processing comments. Members expressed concern that zoning and redevelopment pressure could lead to demolition of existing multi-unit buildings that currently provide relatively affordable housing, and urged exploring incentives for landlords to retain existing housing stock rather than replacing it with higher-cost developments.
Members also raised mobile-home parks as an affordability-preservation example; one attendee described a past transaction in which tenants purchased a park, which helped preserve affordability there. Commissioners warned against unconstrained conversion of industrial parcels to housing, saying the city risks losing job-producing land and should consider where housing makes sense without eroding industrial capacity.
Staff reminded members the master-plan materials and the resident survey remain available on the city website and encouraged further public input. The advisory group will set next steps to incorporate community feedback; no formal policy changes or votes were taken by the commission on the master plan at this meeting.
