Council approves PSO-funded sewer extension to open commercial development at key intersection

Broken Arrow’s council approved a staff request to use PSO economic-development infrastructure funds to extend sanitary sewer to a city/BAMA-owned parcel at a major intersection, a project city engineers said will enable commercial development on all four quadrants.
Travis Stevens, director of economic development, and Charlie Bright, director of engineering and construction, explained that the city acquired the property in 2017 and has since planned an elevated storage tank and commercial uses for adjacent parcels. Bright told the council the lack of sanitary sewer has been the principal barrier to private development at the intersection and that the project design will provide sewer access for the northeast parcel and allow connections across the corridor.
Bright said the application asks PSO economic-development funds to cover material costs; the city will construct the extension and the sewer layout is intended to serve the immediate parcel and spur growth in adjacent quadrants. Council moved, seconded and approved the funding request (item 26-812) by roll call.
The council voted in the meeting record to direct staff to proceed; developers and property owners near the intersection were identified in discussion as likely near-term beneficiaries once sewer is available. Staff said the project will tie into the water tower and existing mains and that timing and construction detail will follow in staff reports.
