The personnel committee approved an ordinance to update position classifications in the Department of Service Division of Water and Wastewater, creating an additional water meter technician and abolishing a vacant water meter customer-representative classification, Mr. Fox told the committee June 1.
Fox said the department currently has two customer representatives and one technician; automatic remote meter reading has reduced the need for legacy meter-reading positions, and the technician classification includes responsibilities such as testing large meters and sealing meters after lead-service-line replacements. The change is intended to provide redundancy and reduce burden when a vacancy occurs. Mr. Fox said the annual cost increase is approximately $1,500 and the city does not plan to immediately fill the new technician until an appropriate vacancy occurs.
A motion to approve the reclassification was moved and seconded and the committee approved it by voice vote.
Why it matters: The reclassification modernizes staffing to reflect automated meter reading and the department’s current operational needs while keeping near-term budget impacts small.
Next steps: The ordinance will be forwarded to full council for final action as required by personnel classification changes.
