The City Commission approved first readings of two related ordinances (including Ordinance 26-018) amending Chapter 18, Article 4 of the City Code to add membership and transfer-right provisions for firefighter pensions.
Staff explained the change implements current Florida statute language that permits a fire chief, typically at hire, to elect participation in either the fire pension or the general employees pension. The amendment gives the current fire chief—and any future fire chief—a one-time right to elect which pension system to join.
Commissioners moved and approved both items separately; roll-call votes were unanimous on both first readings.
Next steps: ordinances will return for the required subsequent readings and codification steps.
