Nyssa district moves some contracted special-ed services in-house as enrollment grows

District administrators presented four new or revised job descriptions and the board discussed converting previously contracted services into district positions to meet growing special-education and counseling needs.

Administrators said the roles (autism consultant, SLP title change, occupational therapist and an occupational-therapist-related title revision) have been delivered through contractors for the virtual school in recent years. As enrollment and special-education demand rise, the district proposes hiring staff in-house to provide consistent services across brick-and-mortar and virtual students.

A staff member explained the district examined historical workloads and projected enrollment and found converting some contracts to full-time employees is cost-effective and increases service availability. "A lot of these positions are services we already provide; bringing them in-house lets us maximize that resource," a district speaker said. Board members asked how telehealth or virtual delivery would be handled; staff explained assessments can be completed online and interventions often include parent involvement for younger students.

Administrators said funding offsets exist where services previously provided by an ESD or contractor will now be part of district staffing, and that the changes are intended to increase continuity for students. No formal board action was recorded in the transcript; job descriptions were provided for the board to review.
