Staff said the canopy is intended to provide both daytime sculptural interest and an illuminated, programmable night‑time feature; installation is expected in early spring 2027.
Community Center grounds: The council also approved the Arts Commission’s pick — Studio Folia (James Den) — for a field of slender, aluminum 'reads' topped with folded 'origami' birds. The 8‑foot‑tall installation will introduce subtle kinetic movement as the elements sway and will be colored after community workshops.
Council considerations: Council members asked about lighting controls, dark‑sky considerations, bird‑drop maintenance and how interactive features will be managed (staff noted Plaza del Soul will have Wi‑Fi and program controls). Staff will complete engineering, lighting and maintenance plans with the selected artists; if concept changes are substantial, designs will return to the Arts Commission and council for review.
