McDonald said routine city services — including garbage collection, fire and police coverage — have been provided to the property since annexation.
Commissioners questioned the potential consequences of removing the land from city limits, including loss of future tax revenue, building permit revenue and the risk of creating a patchwork of in‑ and out‑of‑city parcels. One commissioner recommended against deannexation, saying it would be detrimental to the city’s long‑term growth and that city services currently serve the property.
After discussion, the commission indicated it would not move forward with the deannexation petition at this time and did not place a deannexation resolution on the agenda for approval. Director McDonald and the city attorney also noted staff would confirm whether any specific legal or service‑coverage issues remain to be addressed if the petitioner pursues other options.
What happens next: Staff will maintain the current annexation status while the petitioner may pursue the formal deannexation process outside the scope of this meeting; the commission did not adopt a resolution to deannex the property.
