Board approves resolution supporting South Central Transportation Authority

The Greensville County Board of Supervisors approved Resolution 26-63 June 1, a resolution expressing support for creation of a South Central Transportation Authority.
Jay Ellington, executive director with the South Central Planning District Commission and the authority's proponents, outlined the concept: the authority would provide locally controlled funds for regional road and public-transportation projects by directing certain fuel-tax receipts (gas and diesel) to the authority and by adding a small sales-tax increment (described in the transcript as "710 of 1 cent" to bring the total to about seven cents). Ellington said local control over those funds would allow jurisdictions to move projects—such as roundabouts, turn lanes or intersection improvements—forward more quickly and that each participating locality would appoint a representative to the authority's governing board.
Staff framed Resolution 26-63 as an initial step; Ellington said the authority would also require additional approvals, including actions by the General Assembly. The board approved the resolution by motion and roll call.
