Mary, a resident who identified herself during citizens comments, said the association "has been doing a fantastic job" running programs for seniors and children and asked the board to "reconsider the decision" not to renew the lease. She said the association ran the program at no cost to the county and called for the board to give the operator "a second chance."
Katrina Gillis Powell alleged the RFP and selection process was handled poorly and said the county had effectively sidelined qualified local applicants; Powell said the current operator provided services at no cost and that putting the facility under county operation would raise taxpayer costs.
Willie Gillis, who spoke later, said he filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the RFP materials and reported that the Washington Park Association scored highest in the evaluation (he cited a score of 366, with the next bidders scoring 271 and 261). He said the board has not followed up on that scoring and urged that the item remain on the public record and be addressed at future meetings.
Board members acknowledged the concerns raised during citizens comments. The transcript records the public commentary and requests for further review; no formal lease decision or reversal was completed during the June 1 meeting.
