Council hears report of person camping outside Buckley Library; staff asked to coordinate with Pierce County Library

Other council members and staff said the individual has been seen before (including charging a phone at the library) and indicated the city’s prior approach has been gentle outreach and referrals to services. Staff recommended first contacting the library supervisor and, if necessary, the Pierce County Library director, and to coordinate with Kurt (city staff) on outreach. Council members emphasized a compassionate approach and the need to avoid setting a precedent that permits camping while also protecting public spaces.
