Wenatchee School District narrows 2026–27 budget cuts after federal funds restored

Wenatchee School District officials said that restored federal funding and additional savings have narrowed the district’s planned cuts for the 2026–27 budget, while officials emphasized they are protecting classroom programs.

The presenter said the district “will have worked through $18.7 million in total reductions over the last four years,” and that this year the district originally faced “a $5.4 million reduction target.” According to the presenter, federal funding for 2026–27 was restored, returning $2.9 million and reducing the district’s reduction target to roughly $2.5 million. The presenter added that staff identified an additional $100,000 in savings.

District leaders framed the choices as difficult but deliberate. “Every decision was made with one main priority in mind, protecting student outcomes,” the presenter said, adding, “we are achieving this without impacting the classroom.” Officials said they are reimagining resource allocation to support students, citing program work intended to boost enrollment and outcomes.

The presenter highlighted several district initiatives: the second year of an accelerated pathways program at a district high school, expanded alternative learning opportunities at Westside High School and the potential for improved facilities through a Wenatchee School District bond on the November ballot, which officials said helped drive new enrollment and growth.

The presenter also recognized the school board, saying it was named the 2026 regional board of the year for its collaboration with district leadership during recent financial challenges. The remarks closed with thanks to staff, students, families and the community and an expression of optimism about the coming year.
