At the April 14 meeting residents used the public comment period to press the council on two recurring topics: restoring a senior citizen property tax initiative to the agenda and assessing data centers as a local economic opportunity.
A representative of the Hillcrest/Bridal Heights Civic Association asked the council to place the senior property tax initiative back on the agenda, saying roughly half of the civic association's residents are seniors and that property tax burdens make it difficult for seniors to remain in their homes. The speaker noted the initiative had been bypassed two years earlier and asked the council to reconsider it, stressing seniors are a large voting bloc in their district.
On data centers, Ursula Franklin said counties already permitting data centers should inform Prince George's County planning, arguing that properly planned facilities can bring long-term jobs, partnerships with local education institutions and infrastructure benefits. "It brings jobs not just temporary, but long term," she said. Demetri Gamble urged the council to view data centers as opportunities for education partnerships, workforce pathways and tax revenue that could support roads and public services, and called for openness to the "flip side" of common fears about such development.
Speakers requested clear county planning and proactive engagement to explore benefits and mitigate risks; council members did not take immediate action during the public-comment period. The items were recorded as part of the day's public comments and may inform future committee or staff work.
