The Village of Homewood on Jan. 13 unanimously adopted Resolution 3245 honoring Police Chief Denise J. McGrath on her retirement after 30 years of service. The board’s vote followed Village Manager Napoleon Haney’s reading of the resolution, which recited McGrath’s start date (May 1, 1995), promotions (sergeant in 2008, deputy chief in 2012, chief on Feb. 26, 2021), and academic credentials (bachelor’s degree in public safety administration from Calumet College of St. Joseph in 2008 and an M.A. in criminal justice from Governor State University in 2013).
Haney and trustees presented McGrath with a challenge-coin display and additional commemorative items; Fire Chief Bob Graowski noted customary gifts given to retiring fire and police leaders. McGrath, speaking briefly, thanked colleagues and said she was leaving the department ‘‘in good hands,’’ naming Chief Tom Johnson and other department leaders as successors.
The resolution specifies the board’s appreciation for McGrath’s leadership, community work and awards over her career. The board offered its best wishes on behalf of the Village of Homewood; no formal disciplinary or personnel action was recorded, and the resolution is ceremonial in nature.
