Thomas “Tom” Johnson was sworn in as the Village of Homewood’s chief of police at the board meeting on Jan. 27, taking the post effective Jan. 9, 2026 after the retirement of Chief Denise McGrath. Village Manager Napoleon Haney announced Johnson’s promotion, citing his experience as deputy chief, detective sergeant and prior work with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force.
Johnson told the board he was “honored and humbled to be able to lead the best law enforcement agency in the South Suburbs,” and said the department’s established culture will make the transition “very easy.” He thanked family members and colleagues and said he looks forward to serving the community.
Also sworn in during the meeting was Brandon Taylor, who began full‑time service with the village last May after completing pre‑employment testing and paramedic training. Staff noted Taylor’s background: a longtime southwest Chicago resident, graduate of Chicago High School of Agricultural Sciences, firefighter certification from Prairie State College, EMT certification from Malcolm X College, and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Trinity Christian College.
Trustees offered unanimous praise for both hires. Several trustees said they were working with Chief Johnson on school safety outreach and encouraged continued community engagement by the police department. The board’s recognition included thanks to family and department members who attended the swearing‑in.
The meeting proceeded after the ceremonial items to routine business and committee updates.
