St. Charles honors local students, businesses and arts leaders with Spirit awards

The fifth ward recognized Laerta Grill and Market (the Marquez family) for multi-generation entrepreneurship and community support; presenters noted the family’s business history, employment of roughly 15 team members, and longstanding charitable involvement in St. Charles.
The council also honored Jeff Hunt, identified in remarks as the founder and director of the St. Charles Singers, for decades of service to the city’s arts community. The mayor noted that the choir recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and that the ensemble planned a tour to Italy beginning June 15, with multiple concerts and a performance during mass at the Vatican.
All recognitions were ceremonial and intended to highlight local volunteerism, small-business contributions, and cultural programs that officials said ‘‘enrich the city’’ and inspire younger participants in arts programming. Council presented the awards with applause and brief acceptance remarks from recipients and family members.
