“We have been around for 18 years,” Pew said, describing a program that emphasizes budgeting, credit management and marketing alongside hands-on barber training. He said the school maintains a 100% pass rate on licensing exams and offers evening classes to serve students who work during the day.
Pew said scholarship money from the parish helps cover tuition for students who do not qualify for federal financial aid and enables the school to provide banking and marketing partnerships, guest financial planners and branding workshops. He urged residents and local businesses to support the academy through donations, internships and patronage of student-run salons.
Commissioners responded with appreciation for the school’s role in workforce development and entrepreneurship, and staff offered to share contact information for those who want to volunteer or recruit graduates. The academy provided a phone number and website for follow-up inquiries.
