Board authorizes SAFER grant application to boost fire/EMS staffing at north county station

The Baker County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously June 2 to authorize submission of a SAFER grant application aimed at increasing fire and emergency medical staffing at the county’s northern station.
Fire Chief Blandon told commissioners the Department of Homeland Security reopened SAFER funding with a tight window; applications must be submitted by June 22 and awards are anticipated in September. Staff presented two budgeting scenarios: a county-funded worst-case that would place two personnel per shift (six full-time positions) costing roughly $420,000 in the first year, and a grant-funded option that could support more positions and reduce county expense.
Chief Blandon and commissioners said applying preserves the county’s opportunity while allowing the board to decline the grant later if the fiscal picture changes.
"If we don't put in for the SAFER grant and we decide we want it, we're out of luck," one commissioner said during discussion. The board approved a motion and second to submit the application.
What’s next: staff will file the application before the deadline and return with implementation details if the county is offered an award in September.
