Wauseon council hears department reports on staffing, events and infrastructure projects

City staff briefed the Wauseon City Council on a range of municipal operations, from recruitment and events to near-term infrastructure work.
At the start of department reports the fire chief said the city has been running recruitment advertising (billboard and social media) in partnership with Ohio Means Jobs and is working to get staff certified. The department reported Safety City ran three sessions with about 29 graduates, and the police side of homecoming went smoothly in a new venue despite one generator fuel-filter failure that was repaired.
The fire chief also said crews are coordinating a July generator installation that will require the building to lose power temporarily while the contractor hooks the new unit up; staff asked for a safety-and-code meeting to discuss mitigation in the event of emergent safety issues. Separately, officials said a water-tower at the fairgrounds would be taken down for repairs starting July 8 and expected to be out of service about 10 days; bacteria testing will be required before returning that tower to service and staff will monitor pressure in the Tedro area.
Finance reported income-tax revenue remained below last year (about an 8% decline) but showed improvement from the previous month. Staff also previewed an Everide benefits open-enrollment that will begin Aug. 1. On municipal capital projects, council discussed the ODOT Fon Street repaving field review and staff said they have asked ODOT to consider funding an additional block to finish the route to Elm Street, though ODOT will not fund south of Elm Street.
Tom summarized receivables the city approved for write-off: he told the council “we wrote off $338” earlier in the update and later summarized the amounts as “it was 7,300 for taxes and 3,300 for water,” saying most tax receivables dated from 2017 and earlier. Council approved the write-offs as presented.
Councilors and staff also discussed the hybrid beacon crosswalk project (solar-plus-electric poles are on order) and parks staff said the municipal pool remained busy during the heat spell.
