High Point Road cell‑tower application deferred after neighbors press for alternate sites

A proposed 190–195 foot telecommunications tower off High Point Road (S2026‑34) was deferred to the July 7 Planning & Zoning and Board of Commissioners meetings after extensive public comment and requests for further site‑evaluation.

Staff presented coverage maps and technical documentation suggesting the tower would fill gaps in wireless service. The applicant argued the selected lease area met technical needs and setback requirements; staff recommended the director work with the applicant to explore alternative lease areas further removed from the road if possible. Neighbors said the parcel’s shallow, wide shape made camouflage as a monopine ineffective and worried a tall structure would be plainly visible from homes and public roads.

The Planning & Zoning Board voted to defer the application to July 7 to give staff and the applicant time to consult nearby residents and explore alternative locations or placements; the Board of Commissioners concurred with a matching deferral.

Opponents cited visual impacts and property‑value concerns; the applicant said moving the tower farther across the parcel could increase impacts on other residences and argued county code and coverage needs constrained the site selection. Staff stated the parcel’s width‑to‑depth geometry meant that, while the tower could be set back, it would likely still be visible from the road because of the cleared/open site conditions.
