Council approves $2.35 million purchase of 100-foot aerial platform for Fire Department

The San Angelo City Council approved the purchase of a 100-foot Pierce Enforcer midmount aerial platform to replace the department’s 16-year-old ladder truck.
Fire Chief Patrick Brody said life expectancy for ladder trucks is about 15 years under National Fire Protection Association guidance and that current production schedules for custom trucks can be 42–48 months. A stock platform became available with an estimated 12-month delivery, and the contract amount presented to council was approximately $2,351,312.
"This truck needs to be replaced yesterday," Brody said, stressing the safety advantages of a platform with a pump and onboard tank and the logistics of parts and hose capacity. Council members questioned lead times and resale or reserve strategies for the older apparatus; Brody said older trucks typically move to reserve status and may receive targeted repairs to extend useful life before eventual sale.
The motion to approve the purchase passed with no opposition.
