North Ridgeville approves amended roundabout contract as local water-main costs rise

North Ridgeville City Council on June 1 adopted an amended authorization for the Avon Belden Road and Chestnut Ridge Road roundabout after hearing an updated cost breakdown showing larger-than-expected construction costs.
The city engineer told council that ODOT had committed nearly $1.1 million based on 80 percent of an earlier $1.4 million estimate, but current construction costs are coming in at just over $2 million. The engineer said approximately $500,000 of the increase is for water-main replacement work that the city would 100 percent fund; ODOT is contributing about $110,000 toward construction inspection services.
The mayor characterized ODOT’s share as covering roughly 73 percent of the project. Council moved to dispense with the third reading, add an emergency clause citing safety, health and welfare and adopt ordinance 2026-56; the motion carried on a roll-call vote.
The engineer said there may be additional safety funding available after bids are received and promised to update the council when that determination is made. Councilmember Wilensky (as recorded) emphasized that the additional monies were previously budgeted or appropriated and that the amendment authorizes the city to proceed.
Next steps: administration to proceed with contract advertisement and to report back with final bid and funding adjustments if additional safety funds are awarded after bids.
