Votes at a glance: Long Beach council approves equipment purchases, developer agreement and fee-setting measures

The Long Beach City Council used a block vote June 2 to adopt a package of procurement, grant-covered purchases and fee-setting measures. The items passed on unanimous recorded votes by the four members present (Vice President Famara was absent).
Key approved items included:
- Firewall units and multi-year security service: staff returned with an updated technical configuration and an updated price; the project remains covered by a $50,000 grant according to staff. (Staff noted the original quote was incompatible with IT configuration and the updated quote is $39,560.)
- Dispatch equipment replacement: authorization for $13,138.32 in desktop and monitor upgrades for fire dispatch computers to support modern operating systems.
- Alpine software maintenance: approval to pay a $24,693 invoice for the fire department’s long-standing electronic records and inventory system.
- Two Lucas automated chest-compression devices for ambulances: the council approved purchase of two units (total noted in staff materials as $51,855.16) to equip first-due ambulances; the items will be covered by Community Development Block Grant funds.
- Pedestrian-safety improvements around City Hall and the Long Island Rail Road multimodal terminal: staff described resurfacing and new crosswalks and ADA access repairs; the estimate cited in the staff presentation was $61,574 and staff said a portion would be reimbursed by Community Development Block Grant funds.
- Developer agreement (BSD Long Life LLC) for redevelopment of the former Sunrise Rehab site: the council will not oppose the developer’s Nassau County IDA application in return for a guaranteed community benefit payment that staff reported will make the city 'made whole' for any city portion of tax exemptions associated with a pilot.
- Fee-setting measures: as described in separate items, the council approved moving to a resolution-based fee schedule for certain codes, set Ocean Beach Park non-resident daily pass rates (see article), and approved a modest taxi-fare increase (added to the agenda by unanimous consent). Taxi companies requested a $2 increase to per-zone fares and a $2-per-hour raise to the higher hourly rate; staff said the change is intended to keep local medallion-based services viable.
All items were moved, introduced and adopted either individually or as a block (recorded votes show "yes" by Council members Johnson, Andis, Reinhardt and President Finn). Several of the purchases were funded or offset by grants or existing departmental budget lines, as noted by staff.
What happens next: Departments will finalize contracts and procurement for the authorized purchases and implement operational changes tied to adopted fee resolutions.
