Prince George’s County enacts law banning motor-vehicle takeover events

Council Chair Orietta announced the enactment of CB 12-2026 after a brief public-hearing period and a roll-call vote. The ordinance makes organizing or participating in motor-vehicle takeover events — including stunt driving, speed contests and certain exhibitions — a county offense and establishes penalties consistent with public-safety goals.

Sponsor Council member Fisher, who led the bill through committee, said the measure responds to recent local incidents that caused injury and at least one death: “We saw on the news in this region, someone recently lost their life attending one of these events,” she said, adding the law aims to protect pedestrians and motorists.

Chair Orietta and other members thanked public-safety staff and police leadership for their work in crafting the legislation. Council members who supported the bill emphasized that the ordinance is intended to provide law enforcement with tools to reduce dangerous gatherings on county roadways.

The clerk recorded the enactment vote as 10-0. The council’s adoption moves enforcement to county code; the ordinance text and penalty structure were not detailed on the floor beyond the sponsor’s description that it creates prohibitions and penalties consistent with state law and regional practice. The council did not record any amendments to the enacted language during the session.

Next steps: The county will publish the adopted ordinance and the county police department is expected to provide implementation guidance; no implementation timetable was announced at the meeting.
