Claiborne supervisors pick Columbus Marble Works to relocate Confederate monument

Claiborne County officials voted May 18 to hire Columbus Marble Works to remove and relocate the county’s Confederate monument after County Administrator Ross told the board the county holds a permit from the Department of Archives and History and that the governor signed an agreement with Randolph Military Park to receive the monument.
Ross presented two written bids: Columbus Marble Works at $64,000 and Brookhaven Monument Company at $82,695, and recommended Columbus Marble based on the firm’s history (it installed the original monument). Ross said the county has approval to use a 2022 state appropriation made for repairs to historic structures toward the project. “We do currently hold a permit from the Department of Archives and History,” Ross told the board during the presentation.
Supervisor Odom moved to award the contract to Columbus Marble Works; Supervisor Chambliss seconded. The board carried the motion. The board subsequently authorized the county’s CAMI engineer to work with Columbus Marble and the Department of Archives and History to design and approve the foundation at the new location, a step Ross said is required before physical re-installation.
The vote commits the county to proceed with contractor selection and to the engineering work needed at the relocation site; board members did not specify a construction or relocation start date. The county will proceed with foundation design and then move toward removal and reinstallation at the agreed Randolph Military Park site.
