After truck wreck, Collierville staff seek replacement and resident urges sanitation efficiency, smaller bins

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen on May 26 approved a consent‑agenda request to purchase a replacement automated garbage truck after unit 412—a 2025 model—was declared a total loss following an April 9 accident.

Public Works Director Josh Russell told the board the driver was uninjured, the insurance company deemed the vehicle a total loss, and the town will be reimbursed. Russell said a budget amendment on the consent agenda would address timing differences so staff could proceed quickly to replace the unit and maintain service.

During the budget public hearing that followed, resident Jim Stokes commented on the proposed $5 sanitation fee increase and urged the town to pursue efficiency gains in service delivery. Stokes suggested reducing the frequency of recyclable and yard‑waste pickups on some routes, exploring contracting out hauling instead of operating the fleet, and offering smaller trash carts for residents with limited garage space.

Quote "Maybe twice a month, maybe every 3 weeks on a schedule... It would save a lot of money to quit running those trucks around town," Stokes said, arguing for route consolidation and smaller containers.
