Supervisor Chandler moved—and the board approved—a guideline to prioritize 2026 graduating seniors for the county's STEM summer youth employment program and to prohibit hiring two people from the same household in order to broaden opportunities. The motion was seconded by Supervisor Odom and passed after discussion about fairness and prior hiring practices.
Chandler said the goal is equitable distribution of summer employment opportunities. County staff and the administration were asked to compile graduate lists for verification and to ensure seniors are given first consideration. Chancery/administrative staff confirmed payments for the two-week assignment are budgeted at $500 per participant, subject to final budget availability and potential external support from Energy Mississippi or Grand Gulf funding.
The board also discussed that twins or multiple siblings who are both graduating seniors could be eligible, and supervisors asked the administration to provide clear application and verification procedures before hires are finalized.
