Council approves ordinance sending Santuc Fire District $500,000 bond question to voters

Union County Council on July 9 adopted an ordinance on its third and final reading to place a referendum before voters in the Santuc Fire District asking whether the district should be authorized to issue a general obligation bond not to exceed $500,000.
Chairman Phillip G. Russell II read the ordinance language at the meeting and emphasized that council's action authorizes putting the question to district voters, rather than directly issuing debt. "This is not authorizing them to go into $500,000 dollars’ worth of debt, council is authorizing that it goes to the public, the citizens in the district who would be paying for it, to vote on whether or not it should be done," he said.
Councilman John Flood moved to dispense with committee referral and adopt the ordinance; Councilmember Carolyn Rutherford seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The ordinance sets the maximum bond amount at $500,000 and, if voters approve the referendum, the Santuc Fire District would proceed with issuance under applicable law and fiscal procedures.
