Union County Council adopts updated hazard mitigation plan to preserve reimbursement eligibility

Union County Council unanimously adopted the Multi‑Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan at its July 9 meeting, a document Chairman Phillip G. Russell II said allows the county to coordinate mutual aid and seek state or federal reimbursement after emergencies.
The plan, developed with input from multiple local groups and provided by FEMA and the State, must be reviewed and adopted every five years. "The benefit of approving the plan is that it allows the Governor to declare an emergency in our area and then the county has the ability to submit applicable expenses to the State or FEMA for reimbursement," Chairman Russell said during the presentation.
Councilman John Glenn moved to dispense with committee referral and adopt the plan; Councilman John Flood seconded. The motion carried on a unanimous vote.
County staff had posted the draft document to the county website for several weeks for council and public review; Chairman Russell said this year’s update involved broad participation from local groups. The council did not take further action beyond adoption at the meeting.
The adopted plan will remain the county’s guiding checklist for emergency response, mutual‑aid requests and damage‑reporting procedures until the next five‑year review.
