The Spring City Planning and Zoning Commission voted to approve a permit for a salvaged timber-frame barn to be placed on property owned by John Paulson.
John Paulson described the 38-by-60-foot structure and said he and his wife, Susan, purchased the barn’s timber frame from Monona, Iowa, and intend to use it for agricultural storage. Paulson told the commission the frame has been reviewed by a structural engineer and that the building will sit on a slab, be elevated about 30 inches to protect the wood, and will not be hooked up to city sewer or culinary water at this time.
Commissioners asked about setbacks, roof materials and structural work. A commissioner asked whether Paulson planned to pursue an agricultural permit with the county; Paulson said he would. The commission also discussed potential lead paint and preservation concerns associated with the older materials and noted Paulson intends to retain as much original material as possible.
After brief questions, Commissioner Kristen Mortensen moved to approve the construction as presented; Commissioner Andrew Skousen seconded. Several commissioners voiced their support and the motion carried. The commission congratulated Paulson and noted planned submittal of engineered, stamped plans to the county as part of the permitting process.
The commission’s approval covers the land-use/concept approval for the accessory agricultural structure; Paulson will provide final engineering documents to city staff and comply with any county permit or building-code requirements. The commission did not adopt additional conditions beyond those discussed at the meeting.
