Human Committee discusses AAPI proclamation, candidate-event venue and sheriff outreach

At its April 2 meeting, the Human Committee flagged several upcoming outreach items: a June proclamation for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the need to secure a new venue for a Meet-the-Candidate event, and outreach support from the Sheriff’s Department.
Jessica McMillan told members the 2026 proclamation for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month had not yet been reviewed by committee members. Separately, the committee learned the Agricultural Center on the planned date was no longer available; the Board of Elections Director, Kristen Scott, remains available and flexible to support a rescheduled Meet-the-Candidate event.
Hazel Blount described Sheriff Tyree Davis’s presentation at the previous meeting as "refreshing" and "reassuring," and the committee noted the Sheriff’s Department has a Community Engagement team that will come to events if requested and provide an agenda. Jessica McMillan said she will distribute a survey to determine dates and times for a youth initiative that committee members had discussed.
At the meeting the March minutes were reviewed and recorded as needing a correction; the committee agreed the March minutes will be approved at the next meeting. The minutes also record that Hazel Blount moved to adjourn and Tony Brown seconded the motion; the written record does not show a formal vote tally or an adjournment time.
