The Town of Greenburgh celebrated AARP Tax-Aide volunteers at its June 12 meeting, honoring the team that operated a Westchester County site out of the Theodore D. Young Community Center.
"Our volunteer preparers go through a training program each year and must pass a certification exam given by the IRS," Ben Hunter, the site's team leader, told the board, describing how the group adapted during the pandemic and returned to in-person service this season.
Hunter said the site implemented an online appointment system and handled walk-in visits and phone calls; he thanked the town and TDY staff "for their undying support of our program." He added that the site is one of 17 Tax-Aide locations in Westchester County and praised the volunteers' service to residents.
Town Supervisor Paul Feiner read a list of honorees and presented certificates of appreciation, saying the volunteers provided "more than exceptional" service and noting that the program helped residents who had difficulty preparing returns during COVID. Feiner also reminded homeowners about assessment grievances and the June 18 deadline earlier in the meeting.
The board did not take formal action on the recognition beyond presenting certificates. The Town Board moved on to other agenda items after thanking the volunteers.
