Selectboard accepts lower paving bid; project to use VTrans grant and local funds

Public Works staff presented the board with two competitive bids for the town's paving program and explained the funding split: a VTrans class 2 paving grant was expected to cover the class 2 work and the selectboard had previously allocated local-option tax funds for class 3 paving. The town manager reported per-ton prices and total bid comparisons during the discussion.
"We were given information that led us to believe that we would be paying much closer to a $100 a ton. And, in fact, the two paving companies came in at bids that were less than a dollar different from last year," the town manager said, then provided the per-ton pricing: "Wilkes bid there in the 2nd column at $92.83 a ton and Pike's bid in the rightmost column at $89.35 a ton." Staff showed forecasted project totals and two full bids; the board then moved, seconded and approved selecting the lower bidder to complete the planned paving.
Board members asked practical questions about where paving extents would start and end and whether the grant could be used to lengthen a segment; staff explained grant evaluations are based on the proposed project scope and available grant funds, so adding length to use remaining grant money is not straightforward. The board approved the motion by voice vote and instructed public works to finalize contracting details with the selected bidder.
