West Milwaukee board approves temporary bump-outs on National Avenue, adopts transportation resolution and approves liquor-license changes

The West Milwaukee Village Board voted May 4 to allow staff to install temporary bump-outs on National Avenue, to adopt a 2026 transportation resolution for submission to the League of Wisconsin Municipalities, and to approve changes to the village alcohol licensing code and several license applications.
Trustee John Ragonese moved and Trustee Craig Schaefer seconded the motion to permit temporary bump-outs on National Avenue “as presented at the committee meeting held earlier.” Trustees clarified that the committee’s pilot locations (50th and 54th streets) are the start of a broader initiative and the motion was not intended to limit installations to those blocks. The motion passed unanimously among trustees present (Trustee Schuettke was excused).
The board also adopted the 2026 Transportation Resolution (08-R-26) and directed that it be forwarded to the League of Wisconsin Municipalities. Trustee Jane Edgar moved the resolution and Trustee Todd Hill seconded; the roll call was unanimous among those present.
On licensing, the board approved Ordinance 01-O-26 to recreate Section 6-60 of the municipal code regarding alcohol beverage license quotes. Trustee Craig Schaefer moved the ordinance, Trustee Edgar seconded it, and it passed on roll call. The board then approved a new Class B fermented malt beverage and Class B liquor license for Milwaukee 7877, Inc., d/b/a Applebee’s, 1834 Miller Park Way, naming John Hoffmann as agent; the same meeting approved a list of Beverage Operators Licenses for multiple applicants.
Trustees and staff framed the National Avenue bump-out project as a traffic-calming pilot intended to be flexible in location. Trustee Edgar recommended specifying locations in the motion; committee members said 50th and 54th were only the first placements. No vote detail indicated dissent.
The actions complete a package of near-term traffic-calming steps and administrative updates the board can implement without additional policy drafting. Next steps include staff site selection for temporary installations and forwarding the transportation resolution to municipal partners.
