Hudson City youth department reports higher camp enrollment, hires temporary assistant and outlines summer programs

Mr. Lopez, presenting the youth department report, said the department had 145 children registered for summer camp this year, roughly 10 more than the same time last year. He described the department’s wait-list process — staff will call families in the first one to two weeks of camp to confirm attendance and then move waitlisted children onto active rosters — and said managers are considering breaking camp into shorter session blocks to provide flexibility for families.
On staffing, Mr. Lopez said seven part-time staff will carry over into camp and the department plans to hire eight additional seasonal staff (many high-school–age applicants); the department received more than 50 applicants and refers unplaced candidates to a local workforce pipeline. “We had a 145 kids registered,” Mr. Lopez said; he added the department expects the hires to fit within the approved budget.
The department described swim programming and fees: camper lessons cost $25; lessons for city residents are $30 and $75 for nonresidents. Mr. Lopez said the county is not currently subsidizing swim lessons and that Friends of Hudson Youth provides some transportation support. The department also reinstated the "Baby and Me" family swim sessions.
Mr. Lopez announced Oakdale’s Fish and Derby will return Saturday, June 27, 9 a.m.–2 p.m., sponsored by the World Hour Memorial Fund. The free event for ages 5–14 will include prizes, T-shirts and tracked entries; organizers said they will limit pre-event fishing by stocking fish near the event date to reduce early catches.
On leadership, Mr. Lopez said the department identified a temporary assistant for camp, “Miss Marlon,” described in the meeting as a paraprofessional with the Hudson City School District; the department said the hire is budgeted as a temporary position to support camp operations. The department also confirmed meal service plans with the school district to provide breakfast and lunch during camp and said staff training now includes meal-tracking procedures.
The presentation covered volunteer-led park landscaping and routine repairs at Oakdale, ongoing algae control at swimming areas (staff said a non-toxic algaecide and manual removal were used), and coordination with local organizations for safety and equipment during community events such as a Walk–Bike–Bus on June 12.
Next steps: staff will follow up on online-yoga capability for the Senior Center, finalize camp-session scheduling, and complete onboarding and background checks for new hires.
