The Colts Neck Township School District Board of Education on July 23 approved a set of personnel, finance and policy measures after deliberations over hiring pay scales and a short-term bookkeeping contract to support the business office during a staffing transition.
Personnel items 1–10 were moved and carried by roll call. The board approved the appointment of Caroline Detinger as a teacher at Cedar Drive Middle School. During discussion, board member Mrs. Cameron urged that new hires generally be placed at step one on the salary guide until they demonstrate performance. "I respectfully urge the administration and the board to consider the practice of placing new hirees at step one," she said.
Superintendent Dr. Garvey responded that the district sometimes places experienced hires higher on the guide to attract candidates with required endorsements and to avoid beginning the year without a qualified teacher. She said placement decisions consider prior experience and certification requirements for subject-specific endorsements.
On finance, the board approved finance items 1–7. Members questioned a short-term contract for bookkeeping support (a 30-day total arrangement referenced in the packet) to cover the elimination of a business office analyst position and to assist with audit preparation; the administration said the contract costs will be paid from salary "breakage" (savings from vacancies) and that alternatives such as interns or other firms were being considered.
Policy item P1 (a bylaw on community liaison roles and responsibilities) was adopted. One board member recused from items 3 and 4 due to employment with the New Jersey Department of Labor; otherwise the bundle of personnel and finance motions passed by roll call.
The board closed business and adjourned. The district indicated it will continue administrative planning over the summer and bring district goals for 2025–26 to the board for approval in September.
