Colts Neck board honors student lifesavers, music winners and names annual dedication for Ashley McCormick

The Colts Neck Township Board of Education on Feb. 18 presented awards to students and staff and approved a new annual dedication honoring board member Ashley McCormick.
During the meeting Superintendent Dr. Garibay recognized two students selected for the 2026 All‑Shore Intermediate Band and instrumental music director Jeff Brown, presenting "Golden Horseshoe" awards for musical achievement. Dr. Garibay said selection for All‑Shore requires an individual audition and called the honors a reflection of "dedication, talent, and commitment to excellence." (Dr. Garibay)
Board members also awarded Golden Horseshoes to two third‑grade students who, with the help of a lunch/recess aide, intervened when a peer was choking. A student described performing two Heimlich maneuvers that dislodged the obstruction and the child was taken to the nurse and checked out. The board said the students’ actions were "heroic" and presented certificates in recognition.
Separately, the board adopted a proclamation establishing an annual dedication for Ashley McCormick. The proclamation, read aloud and adopted by the board, describes McCormick as "a wife, a mom, a fellow school board member, and a friend" who has faced illness with "quiet determination" and said the dedication will serve as an "annual recognition" of courage and service beginning in 2026.
The board read the proclamation in full and invited McCormick to accept the recognition during the meeting. President Volpe thanked those who organized the presentation and urged continued public recognition of student and staff achievements.
