Trenton OKs $438,370 road-rehabilitation contract, adds $95,000 contingency

The Trenton City Council on June 1 approved a contract to rehabilitate several neighborhood streets, authorizing a $438,370 construction quote with a $95,000 contingency for potential base removal.

City staff presented the project scope: Barbara, Julie, Jenny and Franklin streets would receive full replacement of concrete curb and gutters, milling of 2 inches of existing asphalt and a new 2-inch wearing course; Toledo Street would be milled/pulverized to a full 4-inch depth and replaced with 4 inches of new asphalt. Staff said the quote came from Al's Asphalt and is an extension of pricing from the DDA paving project.

Staff explained the contingency: if the remaining 2-inch base left after milling is in poor condition and must be removed, the $95,000 would cover the additional work. Councilman Cableton asked staff to walk through the math and confirm the separate line items; staff responded that the contingency is specifically to address deeper base removal if needed.

Councilwoman Hornbeck asked about timing because youth baseball and softball fields are heavily used; staff said work would likely start in mid-August, beginning on smaller streets and working toward Toledo and Wilson, and estimated paving would take about three weeks with restoration work possibly continuing afterward so most paving is finished before school starts.

The council moved and supported authorization to proceed with Al's Asphalt for the quoted rehabilitation and contingency; the motion was recorded as approved unanimously.
