Climate-action commission hears updates on programs, solar outreach and cooling-station schedule

City staff presented a packet of climate-action updates and highlighted several near-term programs and outreach activities.
On program funding, staff said neighborhood development and economic development teams are evaluating recent state property-tax changes and their implications for use of TIP funds; staff will report back when determinations are complete. A TIP-funded program aimed at reducing industrial and commercial energy consumption is proceeding, with staff tracking legislative impacts.
Staff announced a net-zero affordable housing home open house Friday, June 5, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 810 San Drive; staff said there is one video on the city website but no additional marketing materials yet. Commissioners asked about outreach and selection for the student-built house and requested follow-up information.
Cole reported that the first community "solar power hour" at Big Grove in Iowa City had good turnout (about 53 attendees) and described the presentation content covering inverter basics, maintenance and costs. Cole encouraged residents in the six-county ECI area to register at gossolar.org/eci and noted additional sessions via Zoom (June 10), Mount Vernon (June 16) and North Liberty (June 25).
Kendall (climate staff) outlined the cooling-station plan for summer events, saying the program is scaling up with battery-powered misting fans and new cooling towels. Major events where stations will appear include Pride on June 20, the ICD downtown district block party on June 27, the Summer of the Arts on July 11 (Ashton Prairie/Riverfront Crossings Park), two Parks & Rec —Party in the Parks— events (Mercer Park, July 16; Willow Creek Park, July 23) and a final Summer of the Arts event on Aug. 8. Kendall invited commissioners and partner groups to flag additional community events for staffing and equipment.
No votes were recorded for the packet items; staff and commissioners identified several follow-up action items, including more detailed numbers on heat-pump retrofits for city properties and clarification about the housing fellowship's selection process for the student-build house.
