The Trenton City Council on June 1 authorized the purchase of five smart sewer-monitoring covers to improve detection of infiltration in the city’s sanitary and storm collection systems.
DPS Director Mr. Sergeant described the devices and the request: “I am requesting to purchase five smart covers. These systems use pressure and ultrasonic sensors to measure flows, optimize cleaning efforts, and help to accurately identify infiltration. The data is captured and transferred by satellite in real time and can be viewed by city staff 24/7 via the website or smartphone.” He told the council the units mount to existing manhole covers and can be moved around the collection system.
Council members asked about data access and operational monitoring. Councilman Persie asked who would view the data and whether there would be on-call monitoring; Mr. Sergeant said “it'll just be a few employees from public works and a few from the wastewater treatment plant.” Members also asked whether other municipalities use the technology; staff said nearby cities, including Dearborn, have adopted similar systems.
Mr. Sergeant requested authorization to purchase the five smart covers from JGM Valve in the amount of $33,592.65. The council moved and supported the purchase; the motion was recorded as approved unanimously.
