Board debates sports-facility fee changes as community groups urge paced increases

Board members and community representatives devoted a portion of the Jan. 7 meeting to a contentious but collegial discussion about proposed facility and activity fee changes that would affect local youth sports organizations.

Representatives of the Colts sports and recreation foundations said they had collected registration fees in fall and were surprised when a revised district fee schedule, finalized in late December, increased charges. Several speakers asked the board to allow programs to honor the previously posted fees for registrations taken prior to the fee change.

Other board members cautioned that district operating costs (utilities, staffing, facility upkeep) must be covered and that fee increases cannot simply be absorbed. Trustees and foundation representatives discussed staged or gradual increases, veteran discounts and hardship accommodations; foundation leaders said they typically offer discounts for military families and work with families who cannot pay.

The board asked administration for a clear breakdown of the new fee schedule and its cost components so the trustees can consider alternatives that balance affordability with fiscal responsibility. No formal policy change was adopted at the meeting; members asked that the foundation and administration continue the conversation and return with numbers and proposals.

Representative quote: "We want to support our students and keep prices low, but we can't cut our nose to spite our face — facility and staffing costs must be covered," a board member said.
